Pre-employment Medical and Physical Functional Screening

A Pre-employment medical is undertaken to understand whether a prospective new employee is medically and physically able to manage the demands of a particular role. It is an extremely valuable part of the recruitment process and form the basis of front-line risk management. It also provides a baseline for ongoing annual health monitoring for that employee.

Proactive can work with you to understand the demands risks of the role, and the typical candidate you need to fill the role to develop a bespoke medical and/or physical functional screening.  All candidates for the role pass through the screening, with each having a personalised report delivered to your team detailing their physical ability to manage the tasks.

  • Review by an occupational health and comments about suitability for the role
  • This screen is well suited to all role types as a baseline

Pre-employment medical assessment

The medicals may include:

  • Health, Medical and Employment
  • Biometrics – pulse, blood pressure, height, weight, BMI, Waist circumference
  • Urine test (for protein, blood, sugar)
  • Audiometry
  • Lung Function test
  • Vision screening
  • Musculoskeletal range of movement and grip strength
  • Drug and Alcohol testing
  • Physical examination of cardiovascular, skin, gastrointestinal, nervous, musculoskeletal and sensory systems
  • Completion of blood screening request and interpretation of results
  • Travel medicine consultation and vaccinations
  • Resting ECG

A certificate of fitness will be issued on completion with advice of the prospective employees medical suitability for employment together with any recommendations, limitations and adjustments required.

Pre-employment Functional Assessment

Functional Assessments provide an objective assessment of the prospective employee’s physical capacity for the work role, by completing a series of tests and tasks which simulate the physical demands of the role.

The testing is always aligned to the job requirements and may include:

  • Safe maximum lifting and carrying test
  • Strength tests (back, abdominal, lower limbs, upper limbs)
  • Range of movement
  • Postural tolerances
  • Step test or cardiovascular capacity test

The functional test could be completed by an Occupational Health Nurse, Physiotherapist, Exercise Physiologist and combined with a nurse led or doctor led health assessment.
