Concussion

The Concussion service is an interdisciplinary service that provides early access and timely expert assessment for people who have sustained a mild (Concussion) or moderate head injury.

Our teams are passionate about what we do and ensure we provide quality and expert care to support Kiritaki (clients) through their journey to support their recovery and return to everyday life.

Proactive proudly hold a range of contracts to support our Kiritaki in all aspects of their recoveries (Vocational services, Pain Management, Training for Independence, Social Rehabilitation)

ACC funded concussion service support can be provided to Kiritaki if the below criteria is met:

  • They have been diagnosed, or are suspected of having, a mild or moderate traumatic brain injury, or persisting concussion symptoms by a Medical Practitioner or Nurse Practitioner.
  • The injury occurred within the last 12 months.
  • They have an accepted claim with ACC.

For Kiritaki to progress from initial assessment they require the appropriate read code of S60 Concussion or S646 Head injury loaded against their claim

Signs and Symptoms of Concussion

Following a concussion or moderate brain injury people commonly experience a range of symptoms including:

  • Headaches
  • Tiring more easily
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Forgetfulness and memory problems
  • Difficulty concentrating and being easily distracted
  • Slowed thinking
  • Irritability, depression, anxiety and personality changes
  • Poor balance or dizziness
  • Noise and light sensitivity

All of these symptoms can affect the clients ability to return to work or study, and how to manage their usual activities.

Our Process

We can accept referral from GP’s, Hospital and/or Medical Professionals/Specialists.

Once a referral is received, an experienced therapist contacts the Kiritaki to triage their needs. We then meet the Kiritaki to carry out an initial interview to gather more information about the accident and ongoing symptoms and difficulties. The client will be provided with information and advice about brain injury, and how the client can manage symptoms to ensure they are on the right path for recovery.

A treatment and rehabilitation plan is developed to support the recovery. This can include any of the following, depending upon the clients assessment and identified needs:

  • Allied health assessment and input provided Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy or other allied health disciplines to support Kiritaki treatment and self-management of ongoing symptoms and functional deficits.
  • Psychological consultation sessions with a psychologist to support Kiritaki with the psychology factors and impact of their injury. To provide them with helpful strategies to support optimal self-management.
  • Medical assessment with a Medical Specialist experienced in concussion, to provide a medical review to assess and treat headaches, sleep disturbances, mood disturbances and other physical symptoms.
  • Neuropsychological screening assessment with a Neuropsychologist to assess cognitive function/deficits (how well your brain is thinking and processing information)
